Erkina history

In Greek mythology Erkina was a Nymph of a homonymous source in Livadia, Boeotia. For Erkina, daughter of Trophon, she is reported to have been a companion to Persephone, the daughter of the goddess Demetra, before the second kidnapped by Pluto. The two of them played one day with a goose near the town, in the grove of Trophon. Their bird escaped and went to hide in a cave under a stone. Persephone lifted the stone to catch the goose, so a source ran out of the earth: the spring of Erkina. All the believers were asking for arousal of the Orphan of the Trophon, which was a short distance away. Today, the river  which crosses Livadia has this name . This river has endured for many years the necessary energy for the development of the industry, the craft industry and the processing of agricultural products. Today, the river Erkina with its springs in the area of Krysa gives the city of Livadeia a special natural beauty. Its characteristic is that it is one of the few rivers in Greece that has a female name, along with Arapitsa in Naoussa and Neda at the borders of Ilia and Messinia to form the most famous. Asteroid 458 Hercynia, discovered in the year 1900, was named after the Nymph of Boeotia.
